I have been watching The Sopranos lately and have been loving it! I think the reason I like the show so much is because it reminds of a mix between all ganster/mob movies and Tarantino. Hold on, let me explain. During the show they will make remarks like where does he rank Goodfellas, another example would be them talking about the difference between laserdisc and dvd. Thats the kind of things I like about the show, when they stop and talk like regular people. Also another Tarantino-like thing would be the use of songs, the songs are used perfect. One great example would be in the first episode of season one when Tony has to run a man down for not paying him. He drives his car, through like a little park, after the dude while a great song, that if you were to first listen to the song you wouldnt think it would work in the scene, plays. Thats were I come up with the Tarantino remark.
Now I want to make a top five favorite directors and list the movies I like made by them. And remember there is a difference between favorite and best as you will see with the first director on my list.
1. Quentin Tarantino - Alright I want to say that I dont think he has made a bad movie yet. And that his movies are some of my favorites, hence the choice of him. Plus I like his personality, you can tell he loves movies! Also the more I post on the Criterionforum.com boards the more I think he is underrated. He writes a great script and can direct his actors.
2. Akira Kurosawa - All right he is the master. He made the great samurai epic which in my mind is the BEST movie ever, Seven Samurai. Then he goes on very late in life to make the masterpieces Kagemusha and Ran. The colors in his later movies are so beautiful and the way he tells his story is remarkable.
3. Alfred Hitchcock - He is the master of suspense. You got to love him, he made so many greats. Every movie he has ever made you can tell he made it, not just because he makes a trademark cameo is most of his movies, but because they all have a certain feel except maybe Mr. and Mrs. Smith but that was early on in his career. He made at least 15 movies in my top 100 favorites.
4. Stanley Kubrick - He is great the way he puts little things in, little touches and angles its amazing. Its amazing Eyes Wide Shut isnt more popular, its a masterpiece. Along with Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, and many more his collection of masterpieces is of great quanity. Try and find me a Kubrick movie that is terrible! Do it, just try!
5. Martin Scorsese - When he has De Niro he is absolutly a master. But that doesnt mean he has to have him to make a masterpiece. He has made so many! I hate how people are dissing his new movies, they are still better than most new crap out. And I personally can't wait for The Departed. His best is Goodfellas and Raging Bull and if you havent seen those leave you house now and snag them!!!Well there you go bitches. Enjoy!
